11/8/2022 0 Comments Stacks of books![]() ![]() I could go on and on, and tell you about the character who wakes up as a six-foot penis, another who gets vitiligo and goes on a cruise, or the young man who’s offered a beautiful home on a lake, if he only has sex with a white man’s white wife, but I’ll stop here and leave it to you to read the rest.īook I’m looking forward to reading in 2022: I have a whole shelf full of unread books that need some love, and I’ll probably start with A Drop of Patience, by William Melvin Kelley, before making my way to some nonfiction. Each of his stories––all with their own original conceits––strike my favorite balancing act of incorporating humor while also having enough courage to not shy away from the truth. With his debut collection, Stuck had me laughing one minute, cringing the next, and deep in thought the entire time. I read Give My Love to the Savages for a New York Times review of three short story collections, and while I went into the project ready to love all collections equally, man, Stuck’s is the one that blew me away (of course, the others were also powerful). The best book I read in 2021? Traci, how could you! It’s tough to narrow it down to one, so I’ll opt to mention a book that I loved and want to get even more shine: Give My Love to the Savages, by Chris Stuck. Johnsonĭeesha was our guest for Episode 145, and then joined us to discuss The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans on Episode 148. The Final Revival of Opal and Nev is a faux oral history about a ’70s interracial rock n’ roll duo, and even though it’s fictional, the chorus of voices are so damn real and unforgettable! I just marveled at how Dawnie created this masterpiece, a sprawling epic full of secrets, pain, grief, and music.īook I’m looking forward to reading in 2022: Post-Traumatic by Chantal V. And I love that many of these exquisite stories are set in our hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Dantiel writes with such wisdom and care, on a craft level and on a narrative level. Moniz and The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton! Milk Blood Heat is a brilliant short story collection that left me breathless, made me laugh, and made me feel. ![]() Just be sure it’s not a cake. The best book I read in 2021… I could not break a tie between my Duval homegirls’ books, Milk Blood Heat by Dantiel W. If you ever find a book in our catalog that identifies a location of Closed Stack, ask at the Circulation Desk. This effect evokes the scattered bits of foxing present in older papers used in these bindings. For a special surprise, use a confetti batter, which will expose the sprinkles dotted throughout the cake when sliced. As a result of this detachment, one needs to use book tie, a cotton band used to secure together the boards, spine and text block. The boards on this cake are made of gingerbread cookie and are completely separate from the cake sponge representing the book’s text block. The structure of older books tends to weaken with time, as well, often resulting in a detached spine and boards. To get the red rot effect on the cake, use ample cocoa powder to dust the covers. Following are instructions to make your own Closed Stack book cake.īecause Closed Stack holds aging books, the materials used in the binding age too, like the leather covers, which disintegrate with red rot. To celebrate a major milestone of 50% completion, and to thank Simen Kot and Cullen Gallagher for their hard work, I baked a cake to resemble a typical book from Closed Stack. This project has included many staff hours spent among the books. We have been embarking on a long-term project to inventory all 30,000 volumes housed in Closed Stack, to ensure the dependability of our collection and catalog and to prepare for future building changes. This variety of materials is what makes Closed Stack interesting! Some materials hold special signatures or item-specific rarities that must be kept intact. Some materials are too large for any other shelves in the building, so specially-built shelving was created to hold 1000 linear feet of materials lying flat. Some materials are in Closed Stack because of their condition and require special housing. ![]() This in-between is what is held in Closed Stack. Did you know that we also have a closed stack, open only to staff? In this aptly named Closed Stack, we house ten percent of our collection, in compact rolling shelving to make the most of this subterranean space to hold around 30,000 items.Īs a collecting institution, we have materials that range from unique rare materials to 2022’s newest books and everything in between. You know all about our open stacks that members are welcome to browse, full of books ready to check out. ![]()
